MountainManny: I'm sorry to hear that. A few years ago, we had locked our bikes at the Shingle Springs trailhead (since the spillway gate was locked) and did a 3-day trip back there. When we got back, our bikes were gone, and the awesome evening ride we planned back down to our car turned into a 5 mile slog down the fire road in pitch black, worried sick that someone stole our bikes.

Turns out somebody (with a key to the spillway gate - ie US Forest or Water Dept) cut our locks, and drove our bikes down and set them at the spillway gate. WTF. Amazed they weren't stolen. I called and raised hell because bikes are legal back there (I checked beforehand), but nobody fessed up and the desk workers were "surprised" it happened.

So yeah, in my experience, those guys suck. I still plan to go back to Cherry Creek, but never with bikes.

Thanks for sharing. For the first time in over 20 years I ran into some very unreasonable US Forestry Rangers. They were also a little grouchy. Watch out - I don't mind being reminded to be a good stewart of the land, but the group I ran into were just out to make us miserable. Doubt if I will ever go back to Wood,

Please try downloading the map again. I've replaced the URL at the top of the article with the full-sized map image (almost 5MB) and it seems to be working for me.

Although I am far too fat to set out on an amazing journey like this, I really enjoyed the read. I decided to eat some granola whist paging through. Let me tell you, I was right there with you man, reeking of BO, grasping sharp rocks, and slapping the back of my neck to kill bugs.
